Workshop Stream: Diagnosing a Dead Flyback

Still frame from Workshop Stream: Diagnosing a Dead Flyback

DESCRIPTION

Last Thursday’s stream was a set that powered on with a faint whine and no picture. The recording is still being cut, so here is a frame from the bench.

The flyback had a hairline crack that arced under load. A replacement is on order.

What to watch for

  • The faint arc visible in the dark.
  • How we measure the high-voltage side safely.
  • Signs the flyback, not the tube, is at fault.

Which flux did you end up using? The no-clean stuff left a haze on my last job.

Rosin flux from a jar, cleaned with isopropyl straight after.

Ha, we have all been there. The scar is educational.

Great photos. The one of the chassis with the shield off is going on my wall.

Thanks! The shield photo took about twenty attempts.
