Tears of Steel Off a Worn VHS Dub

Rufus Tanaka 18-09-2026 8 Comments

DESCRIPTION

We dubbed Tears of Steel onto tape, then dubbed the dub, and kept going until the fourth generation. The result is a surprisingly good lesson in how analogue loss accumulates.

Colour goes first, then fine detail, and finally the tracking starts to wander at the top of the frame.

What to watch for

  • Chroma noise in the grey Amsterdam sky.
  • Head-switching noise at the bottom of the frame.
  • Audio wow on the sustained notes.

The scanline shot is gorgeous. What camera settings did you use to avoid the moire?

Manual focus, shutter at 1/30 so it covers a full field.

The tip about the grounding strap should be in bold at the top.

Nice work. For anyone reading: the service manual is on page 14 of the archive scans.
