Light guns do not shoot anything. They look for a flash of light at a precise moment in the raster scan, and they rely on the CRT drawing the frame line by line.
How the Zapper decides
- The game blanks the screen and draws white boxes over targets.
- The gun’s photodiode checks for light on the right frame.
- Any processing lag and the hit window is missed.
A light gun is a clock, not a camera. That is why it needs a tube.
Otto Brennan
Modern screens buffer the frame, adding just enough delay that the timing never matches.

Great photos. The one of the chassis with the shield off is going on my wall.
Agreed, and thanks for adding the page number.
The scanline shot is gorgeous. What camera settings did you use to avoid the moire?
Parts list is going into the next post, promise.

This is exactly the write-up I needed before opening mine. Bookmarked.
Nice work. For anyone reading: the service manual is on page 14 of the archive scans.
Any chance of a parts list? I would love to follow along with the same kit.
