Scanlines Are a Feature, Not a Bug

Artists working on 240p consoles knew their art would be drawn with dark gaps between lines. They shaded for it, and the art looks flat without them.

What changes with scanlines

  • Dithering blends into new colours.
  • Hard edges soften into curves.
  • Highlights bloom slightly, adding depth.

We drew for the television, not the pixel. The television was the canvas.

Dee Okafor

Sharp square pixels on a modern screen show every dithering pattern. On a tube, the same dithering blends into smooth gradients.

Arcade restorer and JAMMA wiring pedant. Otto has rebuilt more cabinets than he can fit in his garage, which is saying something.

Any chance of a parts list? I would love to follow along with the same kit.

Good question. We measured it and it dropped by about half after the recap.

That colour bar test pattern is a nice touch. Makes the comparison easy to read.

The scanline shot is gorgeous. What camera settings did you use to avoid the moire?

The tip about the grounding strap should be in bold at the top.
