Old boards use leaded solder and thin traces. A temperature-controlled station with a range of tips makes the difference between a clean joint and a lifted pad.

What to look for

  • Closed-loop temperature control.
  • Cheap, widely available replacement tips.
  • A heavy stand that will not tip over.

A good iron makes you look skilled. A bad one makes you look like you are learning.

You do not need the most expensive station. You need one that holds temperature and takes tips you can still buy.

I tried this last winter and skipped the discharge step. Do not skip the discharge step.
