Sintel Trailer at 480p: Worth the Bandwidth?

Priya Sandoval 15-08-2026 8 Comments

DESCRIPTION

The kiosk in the workshop window plays video directly from a file. We tested the 480p Sintel trailer to see if the quality is good enough from across the street.

It is. At that viewing distance, 480p on a tube looks better than 1080p on the old flat panel it replaced.

What to watch for

  • Detail in the snowy mountains.
  • How the title cards hold up.
  • Loop point smoothness at the end.

I tried this last winter and skipped the discharge step. Do not skip the discharge step.

Thanks! The shield photo took about twenty attempts.

Same here. Seems like the whole production run had it.

Ha, we have all been there. The scar is educational.

Did you check the ripple on the 5V rail before and after? Curious how much it moved.

That colour bar test pattern is a nice touch. Makes the comparison easy to read.

Same board revision as mine, and the same two caps had leaked. Must be a batch thing.
