Letterboxing used to be the only way to watch widescreen films at home. We played Sprite Fright on a 4:3 set to remember how much screen you give up.

On a small tube the bars feel huge. On a larger one, the picture still holds up surprisingly well.

What to watch for

• The black bars and how dark they really are.
• Detail in the forest scenes at reduced height.
• How the subtitles sit inside the picture area.
